The con of worship instrumental music

There is a great deal of instrumental music produced and labelled as ‘worship music’ because apparently it’s unique and thought provoking sounds will take those that listen to it on some sort of intimate heavenly journey. Forget the sounds of Enya, Tangerine Dream or any other reputable instrumental music geniuses because this music is endorsed by the lord himself.Having listened to this so called ‘niche’ of Christian music inside the instrumental music genre I fail to see just how it is as ‘unique’ as it is claimed to be. In fact I wonder if it where not labelled ‘Christian’ whether this music would even get published.

It is astounding that there are so many smaller artists and groups in the instrumental music market that create quite wonderful music yet struggle to make a living because they are in this niche. Yet due to the deep pockets and sheer numbers of  Christians the people that compile this ‘worship music’ make a killing despite this music also being in and around the same niche! The wealth is very unevenly spread across the entire music market as a whole which is a well known fact but it can’t do the hope of smaller artists any good when the scales are just as uneven within a niche sector.

Most people interested in instrumental music looking for new music will go onto Itunes for example and listen to instrumental music clips before buying what they like the sound of and disregarding what they don’t like. ‘Worship music’ is bought just because of how it is described in it’s pen picture ‘his music’ and ‘his presence’ for example are phrases that encourage the sale of thousands of tracks and CD of this glorified rubbish.

It wouldn’t matter if many purchasers listened to a clip beforehand and it sounded like that drunk busker that often sits outside tube stations, there’s something in those strings that the lord likes so let’s buy ten copies! In my experience as far as talent goes the busker wins every time!
